What is Herve cheese PDO? ?

Map of Herve

With its PDO label, Herve cheese is even better placed to be an excellent ambassador for its place of origin! The European Commission granted it the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label in 1996.

This label protects “the designation of a product which is produced, processed and prepared in a specific geographical area, using acknowledged local know-how.”

To be able to be called Herve cheese, it must therefore comply with the following conditions: be produced in the region covered by the name Pays de Herve, use milk produced in this region, and respect precise specifications. The area covered by the PDO zone was set using the natural and geographical limits of the Pays de Herve: the Vesdre and the Ourthe in the south, the Meuse in the west, the Netherlands in the north and Germany in the east.

The Pays de Herve

Picture of a cow

Aubel, Charneux, Bolland, Saint André, Melen, Clermont, ... forty or so little villages in the east of Belgium, scattered among the pastures.

The Pays de Herve is crisscrossed by rivers, hedges and fields of lush grass; it has a wet climate, cows graze under the shade of fruit trees. This is the Pays de Herve!

It is the birthplace of Herve cheese; it has set the pace of life, moulded the appearance of the countryside and influenced the architecture.
